His dedication to improving naval operations was further demonstrated in 1974 when he established a comprehensive one-week Management course for Junior Commanders, a program that significantly enhanced the training of naval officers.

His impact on naval strategy and operations was further exemplified by his influential work on the “Defence of Andaman” project, as well as his efforts in creating a ship journal aboard INS DHARANI. These contributions underscored his forward-thinking approach and his commitment to advancing naval knowledge.

In 1977, Captain Pillai transitioned to the academic sphere as the Head of the Department of Ship Technology at Cochin University of Science and Technology. His leadership was pivotal in the establishment of this department, and his excellence in the field was recognized with the prestigious NORAD fellowship in Professional Shipping. His consultancy work with Intercon Maritime Consultants and the government of Maharashtra, particularly in port development, further highlighted his strategic acumen and his ability to drive significant infrastructural advancements.
